Many people awoke to the sound of thunder this morning, while storms beat across the Quebec. The Montreal, Quebec, Eastern Townships, Beauce, the Saguenay and Abitibi have been affected. Lightning also struck at various locations. Very significant rainfall in a short time generated ponding problems on several roads. In Montreal, a way of the Metropolitan Highway has also been closed westbound at the height of the Pie-IX.
A taxi, a car and a delivery truck are stuck under an overpass in Montreal, at the corner of Hochelaga and Viau, in the east of the city. These accumulations of water are explained by a very humid air mass, according to André Cantin, Environment Canada. «The estimated from radar data, tells us between 40 and 50 mm of rain in less than an hour, which explains the conditions for floods that some areas have experienced,» he says. This cocktail weather also causes power outages in some areas, including the Chicoutimi-Nord, Saguenay.
Eventful afternoon Several regions are taking advantage of lulls, but severe thunderstorm watches remain in effect for the regions of Montreal, Eastern Townships and Bois-Francs. Accompanied by strong winds and sudden rush and very abundant, they are expected in late afternoon, around rush hour. According to Mr. Cantin, all sectors of the Outaouais Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean are potentially affected. Waterlogged streets, lots of flooded basements, enclosed public places. The violent storm that hit on part of the province has caused many emotions late yesterday afternoon. Sherbrooke to Mont-Tremblant, Mother Nature was acting up. And Montreal is no exception. The torrential rains that fell for nearly 30 minutes of the metropolis caused accumulations ranging from 40 to 70 mm depending on the sector. In comparison, the memorable flood of 14 July 1987 had seen 57 to 103 mm of water fall on Montreal in two hours. The water level rose rapidly through the streets, especially downtown, causing road closures. «It is very uncommon,» surprised the Environment Canada meteorologist André Cantin. The phenomenon is not seen only every five years, approximately, in a given sector. A mass of very hot air above the city had caused the first wave of thunderstorms in the morning. The sunny weather that followed «the heated pot and allowed the development of other storm cells that erupted in the late afternoon,» says Cantin. Backflow The Fire Department of Montreal was overwhelmed. To 21 h, there was always more than 1,000 calls from citizens struggling with sewer backups and flooding on the waiting arms of an intervention. It's amazing,» says Chief Claude Deschuymer. Firefighters were already at home when Toula Drimonis found that the underground parking garage of his apartment building was flooded and the main entrance portico had collapsed under the pressure of the water. «It's a disaster,» says that the content of the presentation is lost. «To lose the things I can replace, it does not bother me too much. But I had books, photographs. It makes me really sad, »she says. In addition to the tornado warnings, Montérégie, which saw 10,200 outages in the morning, was affected by the storm of the afternoon. «At 16:00, we had managed to fall to 667 homes down, but with the storm of 17:00, it is rendered to 3,500 outages,» said Marie-Helene Devault, spokesman for Hydro-Quebec . Paralysis The subway system in Montreal has also paid the «deluge». The water level in the tunnels connecting the stations Square Victoria, Place d'Armes and Champ de Mars was such that the pumps were no longer providing. The service was stopped on the orange line as long as water is absorbed. At the Place Ville-Marie, who was evacuated, the water came pouring through the ceiling lights in some stores, says an employee. «We never saw anything like that,» says Melanie. - In collaboration with QMI Agency Flood of May 29, 2012

et
David Santerre (Montreal) The severe thunderstorm that hit Montreal on Tuesday has caused extensive damage in the greater metropolitan region. Flooding across the city have forced the closure of many roads, tunnels and shopping malls as well as the judgment of the orange line between Berri-UQAM and Lionel-Groulx. Nearly 30,000 homes were without electricity across the province. The storms began to rumble in the late afternoon in southern Quebec, particularly over the regions of Montreal and Laval. Environment Canada reports that 45 millimeters of rain fell over eastern Montreal in less than an hour. Winds up to 60 km / h under the storm cells were recorded. When the storm began to break out around 17:00, a tornado warning was even issued. It does not happen. Rainfall resulted in significant accumulations of water on roadways around the city. Between 17:30 and 19:00, Transports Québec has decided to close Highway 720 East (Ville-Marie tunnel) and the University exit (westbound). According to Yves Kirouac, spokesman for Transport Quebec, a dozen cars were trapped there. A handful of other drivers suffered the same fate in a sling exchanger city Saint-Pierre, which converge Highway 20 East and Highway 138. In Montreal, many cars were trapped in the floods, especially in the boroughs Southwest and LaSalle, who seem to have been hardest hit. On Saint Patrick's, near the Light Street, bordering the Lachine Canal, the cars were trapped in waters that have suddenly mounted at their cover. Firefighters had to rescue them. Benoit Dorais, mayor of the borough Southwest, reported that the Atwater tunnel, Carillon and St. Margaret were closed in its field. Firefighters were also asked to Hydro-Quebec to cut the power station at Atwater because of widespread flooding in the area. This station feeds 7,000 subscribers. In all, in Montreal, 15,300 customers are without power. The heavy steel covers many manholes have flown through the air under high water pressure, and a geyser of ten meters was observed on the rue Saint-André in the Plateau Mont-Royal . Metro and shopping centers Several shopping centers downtown have also been flooded, including the Eaton Centre and Place Montreal Trust. «A foot of water has accumulated in five minutes in the store at Metro. We had to quickly evacuate because of electricity, but at first glance, if I calculate quickly I easily $ 50 000 damage over the furniture. Probably more, I'll know when I can go back tomorrow, »says Yves Malenfant, owner of Personal Edge, at the Metro Montreal Trust. In the Southwest, many sewer backups caused the accumulation of a brown water and foul the streets. «There are many streets where there are up to 18 inches of water and strong sewage smell. There are some who have the doors open and out waste from their homes on the street at the corner Workman and Green. It will require an operation to ensure public health. There are also covers of manholes that were moved. It's dangerous,» describes the mayor of this borough, Benoit Dorais. Four libraries and three community centers in his area are also closed due to flooding. A landslide also occurred in the Southwest, leaving on private land a crater four meters in diameter by one to two meters deep. In Notre Dame de Grace, a low brick wall collapsed on the car's owner. Numerous buildings were flooded and evacuated, almost everywhere in town. The Press also noted that a significant amount of water had accumulated inside the station Place d'Armes in Old Montreal. There would be a few inches on the ground floor of the wickets. STM has also announced a decision to 6:15 p.m. service on the Orange Line between the Berri-UQAM and Lionel-Groulx indefinitely. The center received 911 of Montreal, at the height of the storm, so many calls it has exceeded its capacity. Side of Longueuil, the scenario is similar, reports the local police.

The violent storm that broke out late Tuesday afternoon caused widespread flooding in downtown Montreal and 15,300 power outages. This is the district of South West which was hardest hit with 7,000 homes without power to 19:30, according to the spokesman for Hydro-Quebec Jean-Philippe Rousseau. Electricity may not be restored until the middle of the night.
Heavy rains and high winds caused a large accumulation of water in the streets of Montreal, forcing the evacuation of several metro stations. The orange line was closed for three hours, from 18h to 21h, between Berri-UQAM and Lionel-Groulx. «The accumulation limit of safe water has been exceeded» between stations Champ de Mars and Square-Victoria, has confirmed Daniel Fortier of Police of the City of Montreal. Shortly before 21h, the orange line was back in service, but the Square-Victoria station was still not accessible to users, because of water infiltration. Flooded streets Following the overflow water pipes of the city and the sewer backup, several streets of the city were flooded, this is the case of all roads' low profile compared to the environment, «according to the door Speaker of the SPVM, such as roads that pass below the railway tracks». The tunnel Saint-Remi was closed for a while in the Saint-Henri. At 20:00, the ramp to University Street was reopened to traffic and the access ramp to the Bonaventure was about to become available. «The engine has some vehicles found drowned and ten tows had to be made,» reported Yves Kirouac, one of the spokesman for Transport Quebec. Many residents of Montreal have found their feet in water. «We are in the overflow of calls,» reported the spokesman for firefighters, Benoit Fog, according to people who call 911 have sometimes had to be put on hold. Several basements were flooded, this is the case of the VAT, around which firefighters found a geyser of water escaping a pipe, the archive room of the CBC, and that of Cours Mont-Royal. The Great Library of Montreal was evacuated and temporarily closed, as are several shopping centers or the technology supEriOr SCHOOL, at the corner of Peel and Notre Dame. Several UQAM pavilions (flags E, DE, R, DS and the Centre Pierre-Péladeau) were closed indefinitely «due to water infiltration,» and «all activities that were s' place there are cancelled, reported Jenny Desrochers, Executive Communications at UQAM. To 19 h, the situation tended to stabilize, according to Montreal firefighters.

Intense rainfall caused flooding in several areas of Montreal, in the late afternoon, causing an outage in the subway and the closure of Ville-Marie tunnel in both directions at rush hour. André Cantin, meteorologist with Environment Canada, has reported «several severe thunderstorm cells passed through the south-western Quebec» mid-afternoon to early evening. The storm also hit the Montérégie, the Laurentians, the Richelieu Valley, Estrie and Beauce. In Montreal, it is fifty millimeters that fell in just one hour. According to Mr. Cantin, metropolitan area and the South Shore received 40 to 70 mm in late afternoon, and even 80 mm in places. These rains have added to those which prevailed in Montreal at about 5 o'clock Tuesday morning, and had left between 20 to 40 mm of rain on some areas of the city. On the South Shore of Montreal, Tornado warnings were issued, but no damage was reported. According to Environment Canada, the worst was over around 19:00. But the passage of the storm cells have disrupted the movement of Montrealers. The metro service, interrupted on the Orange Line between the Berri-UQAM and Lionel-Groulx, resumed gradually to 20:50, about two hours after the onset of disturbances. But the cars were doing did not stop at the Square-Victoria station. With regard to the Ville-Marie tunnel, closed in both directions to 17 h 30, traffic is back to normal shortly after 20 pm. At 21:00, Hydro-Québec reported that some 15,000 customers were without electricity across the province, of which just over 11 000 in Montreal alone. Two hours earlier, Hydro-Quebec spoke of 28,300 without power throughout the province, and 15,300 on the island of Montreal. The wind-driven rain flooded streets and buildings, causing evacuations in several important institutions, including the Great Library, the library of Concordia University and two pavilions at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) . Some shopping centers have also been affected. The brief but intense rainfall were partially submerged some streets downtown and caused accumulations in subway stations. At Place d'Armes in Old Montreal, the water rose to the ankles at the counters of the station.

Montreal and region have experienced major flooding, following heavy storms, May 29 The violent storms that passed over Montreal have left in their wake rain damage. Within 15 minutes, merchants and citizens of Montreal saw the water rising and damage to accumulate. The evening of Stéphane Garneau, of LaSalle, was nightmarish. It ended the emergency. «Within minutes, there was knee deep in my garage. Then the ceiling started to leak. There was water coming out by the fan. I cut the power and attempted to remove light bulbs, but it was lowered from the ceiling and I'm open hand. My tendon is severed,» he recounted in a telephone interview. «It's horrible. I live in a crescent. The street was flooded completely. When I left for the hospital, everyone was leaving the water in their basements and their garages to the boiler.» The floods also caused much damage on the South Shore of Montreal. Students of the French College in Longueuil, had a scare when the sewers were discharged from the toilet, causing accumulation of water about 20 cm in the basement. «There was quite a commotion fighting to evacuate the children in a safe room» told Lise Millette, mother of two children who attend school. «When I arrived, everyone was excited. Smaller crying because the greatest have made them believe they were going to drown in the water! Moreover, the phone's storage service no longer works because electricity has been cut. That has caused concern among parents.» The water began to flow through the walls and ceiling at Chloé Poirier-Sauvé, an artist of the Plateau Mont-Royal. «About 30 seconds after the rain started to fall was so intense, we started to hear bubbling, then the water started to flow from the wall, ceiling and floor. It's like rain in the room. Smelly, which leads us to believe that there was a sewer backup.» Karina Bertrand, who lives in the Bannantyne, Verdun, has experienced the same situation. «Everything was dry, and in less than two minutes, there were two inches of water on the floor. It was released by the toilet. I heard the water running in the walls. She descended from the apartments above, which had the same thing. ITS makes bubbles in my ceiling. The Bannantyne was filled with water, cars were making waves in traveling there,» says Ms. Bertrand, who lives on the ground floor. «I have more energy and am in the dark for 19h. It's been 10 years since I'm here and I've never seen it. Fortunately, I have not too much damage, I had the time to unplug appliances and set up everything I could.» Several shopping centers of downtown were flooded yesterday, including the Eaton Centre and Place Montreal Trust. Damages have not been evaluated, but everything suggests that traders are likely to make losses significant. «A foot of water has accumulated in five minutes in the store at Metro», told Yves Malenfant, owner of Personal Edge of Place Montreal Trust. «We had to quickly evacuate because of electricity, but at first glance, if I calculate quickly, I easily $ 50 000 in damages, in addition to furniture. Probably more, I'll know when I can go back tomorrow.»
